  1. Peppermint

This one seems to be a staple to have in your cupboard, in one of my previous blog posts I wrote all about how this helped me through a stretch of flu. Having some prerace jitters, pepper mint can help with the nausea, make your brain sharp and alert, helps your lungs work better and can even help with the aches and pains after. Some studies have shown that peppermint can help with endurance by keeping your blood pressure and heart rate steady.

How to use: Mix with coconut oil to make a rub, or after activity put in a diffuser.

  1. Lavender

The oil with the best reputation to relax the mind and aid sleep is lavender. It’s the night before a big run, you have to wake up really early, what is the one thing you will need a lot off. Definitely Sleep. Getting a good night’s sleep is the best thing any athlete can do for themselves before any big performance is required. Surprisingly this oil can also help sooth bruises, cuts and achy muscles

How to use: Few drops on your pillow before bedtime. You can also put a few drops in your bath this will help with the relaxation and achy muscle. Diffusers can also be used.

  1. Wild Orange

When you need an extra boost of energy, wild orange or any orange essential oil can give you that natural energy boost that you need to help you push through your workout. During a run this oil might not be as effective but give it a try with your next home workout

How to use: Few drops in diffuser while working out

  1. Lemon

The happy oil can help lift your mood especially on those days that you don’t feel like running, it will stimulate the nervous system and awaken the senses.  Smelly gear from sweat and running, lemon can naturalise the smell. It’s also known for being a natural remedy for athlete’s foot.

How to use:  Few drops as a massage oil with coconut oil.

  1. Clove

With a lot of the same properties as Lemon, clove has proven to help with inflammation and even to improve your immune function to help stay healthy during strenuous training sessions.

How to use:  Few drops as a massage oil with coconut oil. Can also put a few drops in bath

  1. Eucalyptus

Also having written about this beauty of an oil, it’s added on the list. If it can help a sick person improve their respiratory function, imagine how it can assist an athlete during activity. Can also be used for alertness and assist with inflammation.

How to use:  Few drops as a massage oil with coconut oil. Can also put a few drops in bath. Can also be mixed in a spray bottle with water to help your body cool down.

Ingesting the oils there are too many mixed reports about what is safe and what is unsafe. At the end of the day it’s an oil and mixing it with water will not mix it. Ingesting would rather me recommended with the real item for safe ingestion.
